Gov’t to Improve Transportation to Ease Access to the Capital
President Akufo-Addo has expressed worry over the rate of vehicular traffic jams on roads in the country’s capital.
According to him, vehicular traffic jams and overcrowding has made the capital unattractive.
Delivering his 2nd State of the Nations Address yesterday at the Parliament House in Accra, he said government would improve transportation to ensure easy access to the capital.
“We are spending too much time stuck in traffic and it is unproductive, unhealthy and expensive. We have to build the roads to open up and link up the various parts of the country. The journey times between parts of the country has to be reduced,” he stressed.
Completion of Eastern Corridor Roads
Touching on the Eastern Corridor Roads, Akufo-Addo expressed dissatisfaction at done so far on the Eastern Corridor roads.
According to him “it is a shame that almost 7 years or so after works had started on the Eastern corridor roads we are nowhere near completion.”
He assured that his government would to find the needed resources to complete the Eastern corridor roads.
“This is a strategic road that will provide a cheaper link between the northern and southern parts of our country and a suitable alternative roads for our landlocked neighbors. Unfortunately this network of roads is suffering from deliberate unproductive propaganda,” he mentioned.
Recalling how the previous government awarded contracts using funds from COCOBOD, he said “it is hard to believe that at a time that cocoa prices were going down contracts were awarded for three section of the roads to be funded by COCOBOD.
According to him, this comes as no surprise that directives has been issued by COCOBOD to suspend work on all three sections.
He further stated that his government is determined to bring roads to a befitting status.
“This year we should witness much more activity on the roads,” he stressed.
