The Ministry of Lands and Natural Rresources projects that Ghanaians will plant 20 million trees this year after the successful maiden edition of the national celebration led to the planting of seven million seedlings.
President Nana Akufo-Addo is expected to launch celebrations for the day by planting a tree at the Efua Sutherland Park in Accra.
“John Mahama has been very gracious to agree to plant on the day on Friday,” the sector minister, Samuel Abu Jinapor, told Asaase News. “His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II will be planting, the Okyenhene will be planting, the Ya Naa will be planting, the Wa Naa will be planting, the clergy will be planting.
“Prominent church leaders of our country are going to plant. Indeed, the Pentecost Church is committed to plant one million trees. The Presbyterian Church is going to plant one million trees. The Chief Imam, even at his advanced age, is going to plant.
“And then I myself, I am going to join the British high commissioner and British citizens to plant in the Achimota Forest in commemoration of the platinum jubilee of Her Majesty the Queen,” he said.
