The President of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has tasked stakeholders negotiating the conditions of service for its members to speed up the process.
This, Mrs. Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo said would enable its members to reap the full benefits of the collective agreement.
The GRNMA made the disclosure at the sod cutting ceremony for the construction of a 6000-housing units for its members in Nsakyi at the Akuapim South District in the Eastern Region.
According to Mrs. Ofori-Ampofo, accommodation needs in the past among the membership more often than not has been relegated to the background as nurses and midwives threw all their energies into their community work and education of their students with the hope that their lump sum benefits paid at retirement would afford them the opportunity to build their own houses.
She stated “Over the years this plan has proven to be ineffective because more often than not the paltry pension paid by the Social Security and National Insurance Trust to public sector workers including nurses and midwives could not support the building or purchase of that dream house.”
Mrs. Ofori-Ampofo noted that it is gratifying that the need for housing has somewhat become the priority of nurses and midwives adding that “these efforts are being replicated in all our ten administrative regional branches and we believe in the coming months and years we will be able to assist thousands of nurses and midwives across the country to acquire their own lands.”
The Member of Parliament (MP) for Akuapim South and Deputy Minister for Local Government Mr. Osei Bonsu Amoah in a keynote address assured GRNMA of the full support of the ministry towards the project.
He is sure the project when completed would raise the value of Nsakyi lands and the Akuapim at large.
Mr. Amoah however, tasked GRNMA to ensure the completion of the project within the stipulated time to avoid making it an abandoned project.
Nana Otubuor Gyan Kwasi II, Aburihene and chairperson for the event was happy the project was being undertaken in his area, expressing his supports for the effective execution of the project.
Dubbed “GRNMA Nurses and Midwives Village”, the housing unit facility would be sitting on a 150-acre land comprising one and two-bedroom self-contained apartments expandable to three bedrooms and a three-bedroom apartment.
The project, supported by Omri Projects is funded by the Stanbic Bank through the Ministry of Finance and the National Housing and Mortgage Fund and is expected to be completed within eight months.
