Edward Nana Poku Osei popularly known as Da Hammer of the Last Two is no stranger to Ghanaian music fans, especially on the Hiplife/Hip-Hop scene.
Hammer in his peak groomed Sarkodie, Edem, KwawKese, Tiny among other great hiplife singers Ghana would ever boast of at the world’s music market.
Hammer in his recent interview with Caleb Nii Boye on the ‘Showbiz Live’ show made a shocking revelation on how he had recruited, groomed and planned of establishing singer Agyekum (late) before his untimely demise last year November.
According to Hammer, he had met Agyekum at Hush Hush where he worked as a cleaner. On that faithful day, he was called to check up on some new studio equipment.
Narrating his encounter with Agyekum, Hammer had promulgated categorically that, he had heard Agyekum singing a song from legendary Amakye Dede and that rang his ears to stretch a hand to help a talent.
Hammer who is known as a ‘talent fisher’ took Agyekum to his studio and tried him on a beat. The CEO of ‘The Last Two” recounts the difficulties he had gone through when recording his newly found talent.
“Agyekum was actually not a musician. Yeah, he was able to sing but he wasn’t music inclined. He knew nothing about music and not even his timing. I suffered when recording him. I had to cut and paste every single voice recording till we were done. Whiles playing and mixing the song in my studio, Sarkodie walks in and found interest in hopping on the song, hence his feature with Agyekum on ‘Hohuo Asem’ feat Sarkodie” he revealed to the host on Live 91.9fm.
On his report, Trigmatic had called on him seeking to feature Agyekum on a song. Knowing the weakness of his new recovery, he had asked Agyekum to go to Obrafour for enough training on his timing before he heads on to Trigmatic’s studio for the joint record.
“Trigmatic had called me to feature Agyekum on a song and I have to send him to Obrafuor to acquire enough skills and techniques on his timing. I did such to save him from disgracing himself at Trig’s place. But the unfortunate was that Agyekum later called me and said Obrafuor is not at his level but he prefers Amakye Dede instead”.
According to Hammer, he had to sack Agyekum because he had something he (Hammer) do not like.
“I really hate people who feel too big of themselves. You only had a song on the internet and you already feel to be on top of your game? In fact, I stopped working with Agyekum after that phone call and I don’t think he went ahead with Trigmatic’s feature.” Hammer added.
Nine years later, Hammer reveal Agyekum had gone back to Hammer to apologize for his shambolic character, seeking to work with the record producer again. After several times of counselling, Hammer finally settled on working with the “Hohuo Asem” singer where they proceed on set to shoot the video for the nine years old song.
Agyekum few months after winning back the heart of Hammer passed away at Koforidua Central Hospital after suffering some sickness.
“I finally accepted to work with Agyekum after he had come to apologize on several occasions. We went ahead to shoot the video ‘‘Hohuo Asem’ which was directed by Abdul Haffix. After the video shoot, Agyekum left for his hometown. I had called him one day to talk to him about the video after Haffix had called to tell me that the video was ready for the market. As a matter of fact, Agyekum couldn’t talk on the phone, He sounded so ill at a hospital.. I made him pass the phone to the nurse who was attending to him to ask of his illness. Since I couldn’t go and see him myself, I called on my personal assistant to go and check upon him. It was later communicated to me that, Agekum had passed on”. Hammer indicated.
