Ghanaian champions, Hasaacas Ladies, failed in their attempt to secure qualification for the 2024 CAF Women’s Champions League despite a commanding victory in their final group game.
The Takoradi-based team had secured a 6-1 win over Niger’s AS Garde National on Saturday afternoon in their last Group B match.
However, the result was insufficient to advance to the semifinals, as they were edged out by Omnisports Etincelle on goal difference, with both teams finishing the group stage on four points each.
The scoring for Hasaacas Ladies was initiated by Fatoumata Tamboura, who found the net after more than 20 minutes of play.
Shortly thereafter, goals from Grace Animah and Comfort Owusu extended their lead to 3-0. AS Garde National managed to pull a goal back before halftime, reducing the deficit to two goals.
Upon returning from the break, Comfort Owusu further increased the lead, restoring Hasaacas’ three-goal advantage. Although the Ghanaian side created numerous opportunities to extend their lead further, these chances were not converted.
In the dying moments of the match, both Grace Animah and Abigail Sakyiwaa scored, bringing the final tally to 6-1.
Despite the emphatic victory, the outcome did not secure Hasaacas Ladies a place in the semifinals, as they needed to win by at least six goals to surpass Omnisports Etincelle, who had earlier lost 1-0 to Nigeria’s Edo Queens.
With their Champions League hopes dashed, Hasaacas Ladies will now shift their focus to domestic competitions.
