Help Girls Dream Big – First Lady

First Lady Mrs Rebecca Akufo-Addo has called on Ghanaians to come together and assist young girls to dream big and aim for a brighter future.

In a post on Facebook to mark International Day of the Girl-Child today, Thursday, 11 October 2018, Mrs Akufo-Addo said her Foundation, the Rebecca Foundation, is working with relevant stakeholders to promote girls’ education in Ghana, as she believes “education is the foundation of our development.”

“Together, we can help put a stop to child marriage, reduce high dropout rates for girls and end sexual and all other forms of violence against girls. In partnership with all of you, we can help and inspire girls to achieve their dreams by doing away with any practice that limits their potential,” part of her statement on Facebook read.

International Day of the Girl-Child aims to highlight and address the needs and challenges girls face, while promoting girls’ empowerment and the fulfillment of their human rights.

The theme for 2018 is: With Her: A Skilled GirlForce

To commemorate the day, the United Nations said it is working alongside all girls to expand existing learning opportunities, chart new pathways and “calling on the global community to rethink how to prepare them for a successful transition into the world of work.”

The theme for this year’s commemoration according to the UN, marks the beginning of a year-long effort to bring together partners and stakeholders to advocate and draw attention and investments to the most pressing needs and opportunities for girls to attain skills for employability.
