Hundreds gather for ‘aagbe wↄ’ Demo

Hundreds of Ghanaians today demonstrated across the streets of Accra in accordance to put pressure on the Akufo-Addo led administration against the state of insecurity in the country.

The protest, convened by Bernard Mornah, the National Chairman of the People’s National Convention (PNC), was christened ‘aagbe wↄ’, a Ga word meaning ‘they are killing us.’

The demonstrators, clad in red and black held placards with inscriptions such as “Ghana beyond Delta Forces’, ‘Bloody MP’, ‘Ghana beyond violence’, ‘Bryan is evil’, ‘family and friends government’, ‘Boot 4 boot’, ‘Ghana is no longer safe’, ‘IGP must go’ among others.

Key political figures sighted at the demonstration included NDC Deputy Youth Organizer, Eric Edem Agbana; MP for Ningo Prampram, Sam George; NDC General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, former Ministers of State under the NDC government, Sherry Ayitey and Nana Oye Lithur and former AMA Chief Executive, Alfred Oko Vandepuije among others.

The demonstration was intended to get the government to act on what they describe as insecurity in the country in relation to the Ayawaso West Wuogon violence which occurred last Thursday, January 31 2019.

National Security operatives shot and wounded several members of the main opposition National Democratic Congress at the party’s candidate’s private residence just about an hour into the by-election.

Speaking to journalists and participants of the demonstration Asiedu Nketiah said: ”Those traders who are complaining about high duty this is your day, free shs undergoing the traffic light system, the green and yellow tracks this is your day. Come and pour out your anger, let the government know that they rest on the will of the people, they do what the people say. Democracy does not end at the conclusion of elections, democracy continues, even during the governing of the rulers who have been elected, this is the time you should let your voice be heard”.

”To my friends in the police service and security service, this demonstration is not about you. The responsibility of keeping peace in this country is raised on the shoulders of the police and the security services. What Nana Addo has subjected you to do is the works of humiliation when police vehicles and uniforms will be deployed to conduct this act and people will be blaming the police service,” Asiedu Nketiah added.
