Ghanaian dancehall artist, Shatta Wale was seen celebrating the release of Vybz Kartel from prison.
In the video, Shatta Wale announced his plan to visit Vybz Kartel in Jamaica and celebrate his freedom. He declared his intention to become a servant to Vybz Kartel, whom he views as a mentor in the dancehall music scene.
Shatta Wale said, “I will travel. I will go to Jamaica this time. You will see me on TikTok sweeping in front of Vybz Kartel’s gate. I go turn “boi boi” for Vybz Kartel.”
Shatta Wale’s excitement over Vybz Kartel’s release was expressed in a widely circulated social media video.
The Jamaican artist became a free man after serving a 13-year sentence, following a decision by the Court of Appeals not to retry him for murder charges.
Shatta Wale also criticized some Ghanaian musicians for celebrating Vybz Kartel’s release despite having never spoken about him on any platform before his newfound freedom. He explained that he was the only Ghanaian musician who had consistently supported Vybz Kartel throughout the years and had learned many things from him.
After 13 years behind bars, renowned dancehall artist Vybz Kartel, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, was released from the Tower Street Adult Correctional Centre in Kingston. The Court of Appeal decided not to retry him and his co-accused for the 2011 murder of Clive “Lizard” Williams.
In 2014, Vybz Kartel, along with Shawn ‘Shawn Storm’ Campbell, Kahira Jones, and Andre St John, was convicted for the murder. The case garnered widespread attention due to Kartel’s fame and the controversial evidence presented during the trial.
Despite an appeal in 2020 that upheld their convictions, the legal battle took a significant turn when the case was brought to the United Kingdom-based Privy Council. On March 14, 2024, the Privy Council overturned the murder convictions, citing juror misconduct as a critical factor that compromised the trial’s integrity.
