VICE PRESIDENT Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia has said his deep love and commitment to his beloved New Patriotic Party (NPP) nearly cost him his life.
According to him, he had a terrible vehicular accident as his car somersaulted four times whilst in line of duty for the NPP, and it was a miracle that he survived.
He disclosed that he had the accident when he was returning from the northern region to Accra after a party assignment after the 2012 presidential and parliamentary elections.
Dr. Bawumia recounted that the NPP realized that they were cheated during the 2012 elections, which the National Democratic Congress (NDC) were declared winners.
The Vice President said the NPP then decided to go to court to contest the results of the election so they decided to tour the country to sensitive the people about it.
Dr. Bawumia said on that fateful day, a delegation of the NPP had visited the northern region and they were returning to Accra when his car somersaulted dangerously.
“My car somersaulted four times after two tyres got burst when touring Ghana to educate the NPP members about the pink sheets, ahead of the court sessions.
“The crash was so dangerous that even members of the NPP delegation in a different car even feared that I was dead but by God’s grace I survived”, he disclosed.
Dr. Bawumia was addressing NPP delegates in the Manhyia South Constituency. Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh aka ‘Napo’, the Manhyia South MP, was present.
The Vice President, who is a strong favourite to win the NPP presidential primaries, said it was wrong for any candidate to state that it was his time to lead the NPP.
He said the people who now are claiming it was their turn to lead the NPP, surprisingly, were nowhere to be found when the NPP needed them to defend the party in court after the 2012 polls.
“Where were you when NPP needed men to defend the party in the Supreme Court after the 2012 elections?”, Dr Bawumia asked, rubbishing the “it’s my turn claims” by some of his opponents.
“Most of these aspirants chickened out when the party needed someone to sit in the dock and defend the party because they feared that it would end their political careers
“But I sacrificed my life and political career to defend the NPP. That time nobody said it was his turn to lead the NPP so they would sit in the dock to defend the party”, he said.
He maintained that the party’s decision to go to court to contest the results of the 2012 elections proved vital as it helped the NPP to win the 2016 elections.
“By going to court, it exposed all the tricks that the NDC adopted to win the 2012 elections so they (NDC) couldn’t repeat it again and we won the 2016 polls”.
Dr. Bawumia stated emphatically that he was the right person to lead the NPP to make history by breaking the eight years in political office syndrome in the country.
