I Stepped Down to Avert Tension ─ Sam Pyne’s Opponent
Barely one week after the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) successfully organized its Ashanti regional congress at Ejisu, dusts are yet to settle due to some eleventh-hour developments in the regional secretary race.
This is because hundreds of delegates, supporters and sympathizers of Kwaku Atta Sarpong are still lamenting about his shocking decision to quit from the contest on the eve of the congress.
Sam Pyne was retained as the Regional Secretary after his only opponent stepped aside on the eleventh-hour.
But Sarpong explained that he decided to bow out of the much-talked-about contest in the supreme interest of the ruling party.
According to him, tension was brewing in the party because of his decision to contest Sam Pyne, hence his decision to opt out.
“I withdrew from the race less than 24 hours to the regional elections because I saw that tension was mounting.
“I therefore decided to bow out of the race so that the party’s peace and unity would be protected and the unhealthy tension, which was rising in the political party, would end”.
Speaking to newsmen, Sarpong unconditionally apologized to his numerous supporters for letting them down at the last minute, explaining that his decision was in the interest of NPP.
He promised to throw his weight behind Sam Pyne, the regional scribe, to help make the party stronger towards election 2020.
