The presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress, John Mahama has reiterated his promise to make the free Senior High School (SHS) programme better if he wins the election on December 7.
Ahead of the 2020 polls, there has been a heated debate over which government introduced the free SHS policy.
Mr. Mahama argued that regardless of the debate, the free SHS programme has come to stay and that measures will be put in place to improve it.
“It is not about who implemented free SHS. Let us assume Akufo-Addo introduced it, John Mahama will make it better,” he promised.
The former President said this when he addressed NDC supporters at the party’s rally at Anyaa in Accra on Saturday, December 5, 2020.
The free SHS policy aims to take out the element of cost as a barrier to education.
Under this policy, every Ghanaian child who attains the pass mark, as agreed for the year by Ghana Education Service Council, qualifies to enjoy a three-year scholarship for secondary education.
Mr. Mahama at the rally also urged electorates to vote based on competence and not on temporary freebies given to Ghanaians to solicit for votes.
The NDC flagbearer had on several occasions promised to scrap the double-track system of the free SHS programme if he wins the 2020 polls.
