The Member of Parliament for Assin Central Kennedy Agyapong, expressed his reluctance to accept any potential offer from Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the winner of the NPP flagbearer election, to become his running mate for the 2024 presidential elections.
During an interview on the KSM show on February 23, 2024 ,when questioned about this possibility , Agyapong’s response was unequivocal: “No, I wouldn’t do it.”
He elaborated, explaining that his nature does not align with the role of a vice president.
“To tell you the truth, why I cannot be a vice president is that I would speak my mind,” Agyapong emphasized.
Drawing upon Bawumia’s analogy of a ‘driver-mate,’ Agyapong made it clear that he would not fit into such a role. “I am not going to be the mate,” he firmly stated, shaking his head in refusal.
This stance underscores Agyapong’s unyielding commitment to being outspoken and independent, qualities that he believes are incompatible with the vice presidency.
Furthermore the MP aired his grievances regarding the NPP presidential primaries of November 2023, shedding light on his disappointment with supposed friends within the party.
“This year I will be 64 years so I will not allow anybody to treat me like I am trash, for that I am sorry, so let them do their own thing then we stay back.
“It is not every MP who didn’t vote for me that I am angry at, no, everybody has a choice,” expressing his discontent, during an interview on the KSM show on February 23, 2024.
In a candid moment on the show, Agyapong emphasized that while he is not angered by MPs who did not vote for him, he is deeply hurt by those he had supported and who had turned against him.
“It is not about the betrayal but the bad things that they said about me. That is where I have a problem,” he remarked, visibly distressed by the actions of some NPP MPs.
The sense of betrayal seemed to cut deep, especially considering the support he had lent to their political careers.
