Lydia Alhassan, one of the wives of the late Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon has broken her silence on agitations for her to step forward to take the challenge to replace Emmanuel Kyeremateng Agyarko in Parliament.
In a statement yesterday Lydia Alhassan asked that the politicking should be toned down until after the burial of the late MP.
Lydia Alhassan’s clarification comes on the back of reports of a tussle between her and the late MP’s first wife over the Ayawaso West Wuogon parliamentary seat.
According to her, she has remained in a deep state of shock and mourning following the sudden demise her husband, and has no eyes for the seat.
“I wish to clear the air and state that I have not expressed an interest in the upcoming bye-elections in the Awayaso West Wuogon constituency. I have remained in a deep state of shock and mourning following the sudden demise of the father of the seven beautiful children of E.K, five of which I bore with him,” she mentioned.
A group of youth massed up on Monday at the NPP’s headquarters to protest the ‘decision’ by Lydia Alhassan to stand for the upcoming by-elections.
The group say the first wife of the late MP Naana Agyarko must be allowed to stand for the position solely or they would not vote.
Whiles stating she has no interest for the seat, Lydia Alhassan however admitted that she has been approached by several members of the party to consider vying for the seat.
“Several members of our party and the constituency, in general, have approached to suggest that I consider the idea and my response to them has remained the same; that I be allowed to bury the father of my children in peace and that the time is quite inappropriate for me now to engage in such discussions,” she disclosed.
According to her, she has discouraged those actions in a belief that the rank and file of the party will decide on a candidate at the right time.
She further appealed to the party to tone down on the politics a bit in honor of her late husband.
“I appeal to the NPP family to tone down on the politics a bit in honor of the man who sacrificed and paid his due to the party at this time as the family prepares for a befitting burial. Let us join the family mourn a brother, a father, a husband, a gentle soul who loved humankind extremely,”
Mr. Agyarko passed away on November 21, 2018, from a prolonged illness, and he’s yet to be buried.
A pharmacist by profession, he has been the MP for the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency since 2012.
A by-election is in the offing to elect his successor.
