THERE WERE melancholic scenes at Manso Mpatasie, a farming community in the Amansie South District of the Ashanti Region last Tuesday evening.
This follows the discovery of the lifeless body of the Assistant Headmaster of Mpatasie D/A Junior High School, Akwasi Anane, in an abandoned mining pit.
The body has since been deposited in a mortuary of a hospital at Agroyesum for preservation and autopsy to determine the exact cause of his demise.
The 47 year old assistant headmaster was said be actively involved in illegal mining popularly known as ‘Galamsey’ in the local parlance in the Amansie South District.
According to reports making rounds, Akwasi Anane even owned a huge mining concession Manso Mpatasie in the Amansie South District of the Ashanti Region.
The assistant headmaster was said to have engaged some men who mined on his concession for gold, virtually on a daily basis for him.
Akwasi Anane usually visit the concession and check on his men in the evening. Unfortunately, he fell into an abandoning pit whilst checking on his men on Tuesday.
According to reports, Anane arrived at the concession around 9pm when the entire place was looking very dark so he could not see the abandoned mining pit.
The District Coordinator for the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) for Amansie South, Edward Oduro Nsiah, has said police are investigating the death.
