Jobless Nurses March Today
Members of the Coalition of Unemployed Private Nurses are expected to hit the streets of Accra today, Monday, 7 May 2018.
The group is opposing attempts by government to enroll it members into the Heal Ghana module of the Nation Builders Corps (NaBCO) initiative with a monthly salary of GHS 700.
The programme which was launched by President Nana Akufo-Addo last week, is expected to provide the teeming unemployed graduate youth, jobs under several modules including nursing, teaching, ICT etc.
But according to the nurses, the scope of the NaBCO policy puts health professionals at a disadvantage.
They fear once they are enrolled under the programme, the Ministry of Health will relent on its efforts to get them financial clearance to become permanent staff of the Ministry.
They are also worried they will not enjoy the same financial benefits as their colleagues working permanently under the health ministry.
The demonstration will start at the Obra Spot at the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange and proceed through the principal streets of Accra and end at Accra Hearts of Oak Park.
Meanwhile, Deputy Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Bright Wireko-Brobby, has urged the nurses to take advantage of NaBCO.
Mr Wireko-Brobby indicated that the NaBCO programme is an interim intervention as efforts are being made to provide permanent jobs for unemployed professionals.
