Ras Caleb Appiah Levi, a veteran Ghanaian songwriter and reggae artiste has condemned comments by First Deputy Speaker, Joseph Osei-Owusu that the Rastafarian religion is associated with weed smoking.
This follows comments by Joe Osei-Owusu on the floor of Parliament last Friday that, “I get worried in the attempt to rope in Rastafarianism as religion. If we do that, then we complicate the matter. The reason is this: If you study Rastafarianism, it includes the smoking of weed and weed is an illegal substance. It is not a substance that is permitted to be smoked.”
Reacting to this in an interview on Peace FM’s Entertainment Review, Ras Caleb said being Rastafarian doesn’t necessarily mean one smokes weed.
“Osei Owusu doesn’t know anything about Rastafarianism. He has had the opportunity to be in parliament and he feels to talk anyhow. What he said about us is not true. If you don’t have evidence of anything, don’t just voice out anything. He talks anyhow – he has power to talk so he talks anyhow” he said.
