Even before the Supreme Court passes judgement on the ongoing electoral petition in which former President John Mahama is seeking to annual the declared results of the 2020 presidential elections, his supporters have started to tout him as the best person to be the National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate for the 2024 elections.
The latest Mahama appointee to join this subtle but effective campaign is a leading member of the party in the Ashanti Region, Nurudeen Hamidan, a former Municipal Chief Executive and now one of the party’s regional communicators.
According to Nurudeen Hamidan, John Mahama is currently the most popular personality within the party so it will be in the interest of all for him to be retained as flagbearer in an unopposed acclamation.
“We will fight Alban Bagbin if he dares contest John Mahama… If he has been privileged to be elected as Speaker of Parliament, he should concentrate in Parliament and leave the presidential race to the former president to take NDC to the Promised Land in 2024” the former Asokore Mampong Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) spoke on Kumasi-based Akoma FM. .
Not long ago, a Communication team member of the party in the Greater Accra Region, T.T Caternor, hinted that the party will present former president, John Dramani Mahama to contest for the 2024 elections.
“Whether he likes or not we are presenting him for 2024”, Catenir told Atinka TV’s flagship Morning show, Ghana Nie, hosted by Nana Owusu Nkrumah.
He said the “NDC is going to court not only because of John Mahama, but the EC has breached a lot of the rules and if we do not look at it, it can happen to another person…These are some of the issues we are taking to court, the EC knows better and must come to explain. If the EC boss is confident in what she has done then we will depend on the judiciary for the final decision. We went to court for the benefit of the nation and not solely because of John Mahama,” he added.
Sources near the former President have said he believes Ghanaians voted for him to win the 2020 polls and would do same again if he is given the nod to run for 2020.
The underground campaign has become noticeable to an extent that the President’s representative at the Information Ministry, Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah has said former President John Mahama is among other things, using the ripple effects of the petition he has filed before the Supreme as a tool in championing his ambition to be retained as the NDC presidential candidate for the 2024 elections.
Mr. Oppong Nkrumah gave the hint when speaking to the media after the Supreme Court sitting on Tuesday.
Former deputy Information Minister, Pius Enam Hadzide has also described the electoral petition as an agenda for John Mahama to be retained as Presidential Candidate for his party in 2024.
He added that John Mahama has succeeded in winning the support of the supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as this demonstration has pushed him already ahead of any contender in their internal Presidential race for the 2024 general election.
Pius spoke with Okay FM: “This is also to push John Dramani Mahama for the 2024 general election because they have convinced their supporters that Mahama won the election, but something happened and so if he says he is coming back, they will understand and support him.”
“…John Mahama has already begun his 2024 internal contest. What pains me is that some of the elders in the NDC who couldn’t read in-between the line have been used to do the bidden of John Mahama in the internal politics. They have helped him to win the internal contest to be the NDC Presidential Candidate again in 2024”, he insisted.
