President John Dramani Mahama is reeling under intense pressure to concede defeat in the just-ended presidential elections.
Mr. Mahama for the second time lost the December 7 elections to the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Presidential Candidate and incumbent President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in the keenly contested 2020 election.
President Akufo-Addo won 6,730,587 votes representing 51.302% of the total votes with Mr. Mahama securing 6,213,182 votes representing 47.359% of valid votes cast.
But the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC’s) Mr. Mahama is yet to concede defeat with the highest indication of contesting the results in court.
Mr. Mahama had earlier on warned that he would not accept the results in his words of any “flawed election”.
However, he is under pressure to call President-Elect, Nana Akufo-Addo and concede defeat.
So far, other competitors in the presidential race including the presidential candidates of the Ghana Union Movement (GUM), Rev Christian Kwabena Andrews, popularly known as ‘Osofo Kyiri Abosom’, Dr. Herbert Henry Lartey of the Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP), the Liberal Party of Ghana’s Mr. Percival Kofi Akpaloo and Madam Akua Donkor of the Ghana Freedom Party have all congratulated Nana Akufo-Addo.
Already, Musician and political activist, Kwame A-Plus, known in private life as Kwame Asare Obeng, has urged Mr. Mahama to accept the results of the 2020 presidential election despite his misgivings.
In a post on his Facebook page on Friday, December 11, 2020, A-Plus advised Mahama to call Akufo-Addo and congratulate him irrespective of what might have happened.
According to A-Plus, such a decision was going to help Mahama in politics in the near future.
A-Plus also advised Mr. Mahama to surround himself with those who will ask him to concede because they are the ones who really care about him.
“Dear JDM, “Those who care about you and your political future are those who will advise you to accept the results irrespective of what may have happened, call Nana Akufo Addo and congratulate him, take a retrospective break and make a decision for tomorrow. Those who give you such advice are the people you need around you right now; they are the ones you should be listening to at this moment. It may help you in the near future. This is just a suggestion though. You know better. “I wish you all the best,” he wrote.
The General Overseer of the Perez Chapel International, Bishop Charles Agyinasare has also added his voice to the calls for peace after the elections.
He said Mr. Mahama must choose peace over chaos even as he contests the results of the just-ended elections.
Addressing congregants during a service yesterday, the presiding Bishop referred the NDC’s Presidential candidate to the election petition at the Supreme Court in 2012; calling on him to learn lessons from its implications.
“To him, John Mahama who is contesting the presidential results we pray you do it peacefully.”
“In 2012 when a similar thing happened it was not easy in this country, also a number of people have already lost their lives,” he added.
“We must continue to pray for peace to prevail, may God help our homeland Ghana,” he added.
