Katanga Boys Storm K’si with KNUST VC’s Coffin

THERE WAS drama in Kumasi on Friday when past and present students of the Katanga Hall of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) stormed the city center with coffins and other strange objects.

Hundreds of charged students from the hall, who were almost half naked, were seen carrying different sizes of coffins, bearing the name of the KNUST Vice Chancellor, and inscriptions like “RIP Prof. Kwasi Obiri Danso”, written on them. They were demonstrating against a decision by authorities to admit female students in the hall, and vowed that they would not allow that to happen.

The demonstration caused massive vehicular traffic in Kumasi, especially at Adum, the Central Business District (CBD) and Ash Town, the vicinity of the Manhyia Palace, where they intended to present their petition; but due to their large numbers, only the student leaders were allowed entry into the palace.

Speaking to THE PUBLISHER, Emmanuel Owusu, one of the protesters, said Katanga Hall had a long tradition, which stipulated that only male students should occupy the hall.

He said KNUST should learn from the University of Ghana, which allowed private investors to build hostels on the campus to house the increasing numbers of female students.
