A STAGGERING US$170 million is needed to complete the 45-year-old Mother and Baby Unit (MBU) project at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi.
Briefing a section of the media here over the ‘abandoned project, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of KATH, Dr. Oheneba Owusu-Danso, said he was confident that the project could be ready for public use if the amount is provided.
He said even if all the resources are ready today, it would take about two years to fully complete the project.
“It is estimated that US$170 million is needed to complete the over 40 years MBU project, which has been abandoned for so many years”, he disclosed.
The KATH chieftain was hopeful that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo would complete the project during his tenure.
“Recent signals from the presidency indicate that government is more committed and determined to complete the project”, he said.
Dr. Owusu-Danso was speaking with pressmen during KATH’s 2018 End of Year Review Workshop in Kumasi.
The 1,000 bed MBU project was started during the late General Acheampong’s military regime in the early 1970s, but is still under construction after 45 years.
