The Mother and Baby Unit (MBU) project at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), in Kumasi, will be completed and become operational by 2023, barely three years from now.
The project was started in 1974, which is 44 years now, but it has been abandoned by successive administrations to the chagrin of the management of the leading hospital.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s administration has managed to secure an amount of 155 million Euros to help complete the almost abandoned 800-bed facility.
In his address, during a sod-cutting ceremony on Friday, President Nana Akufo-Addo said he was saddened to see the project abandoned during a visit to KATH in 2017.
According to him, he therefore pledged at the time to invest in the project so that the facility would eventually be completed to help save mother and babies at KATH.
The abandoned MBU project at KATH, when completed, would have 10 operating theatres, pharmacy, isolation centers, student lecture halls and other amenities.
President Nana Akufo-Addo said his government is determined to invest in the health sector so that healthcare delivery would be easily accessible by all.
According to the President, it is important that health facilities were distributed to all corners of the state to help protect and preserve lives.
President Nana Akufo-Addo also said he was impressed about how his administration has managed the COVID-19, a situation that has led to low deaths caused by the virus.
He warned the citizenry against becoming complacent and indicated the need for the people to adhere to all health protocols in order to stay safe and protected from the virus.
Health Minister, Kwaku Agyeman Manu, in his succinct remarks, stated that the completion of the KATH MBU would help boost healthcare in the entire country.
KATH CEO, Oheneba Owusu-Danso, on his part, thanked President Nana Akufo-Addo and the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, for making it possible to complete the project.
