KATH Gets 130 Doctors to Address Shortage

Government has given financial clearance for 130 doctors to be posted to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) beginning October.

The number will replace some 150 doctors who left the facility after completing their housemanship, the Minister of Health, Kweku Agyemang-Manu, has said.

This follows a decision by the hospital to suspend new emergency admissions due to the shortage of doctors.

But speaking on Accra-based radio station, Class FM on Friday, Mr Agyeman-Manu explained the cause of the shortage of doctors and assured that 130 new doctors will be posted to help in health care delivery at the facility.

“I think this year what is happening is that there is a new batch to replace those that are leaving and that’s where Komfo Anokye has had some sort of a problem… But then those there who should stay on until these new doctors come to replace them, about 15 of them have vacated their post and they are saying that they wouldn’t work with Komfo Anokye Hospital so they are going to wait for postings at other facilities and that is what is causing the problem…” he explained.

He further gave the assurance that “We have actually allocated 130 doctors, we’ve got financial clearance for them to replace those that are leaving and they are going to come from beginning of October.”
