Hundreds of head porters, mostly women with their children, in Kumasi have been rendered homeless and they are now struggling to have a place to sleep at night after fire swept through their make shift structures they relied on as homes.
This unpleasant development has occurred when Dagomba Line, a huge slum in Kumasi, where the head porters stay, was consumed by inferno.
The fire, which started on Friday evening, reportedly, flattened several wooden structures, which served as home for the head porters.
What started the fire was not immediately known but eye witnesses said they saw a smoke in one of the rooms and suddenly it broke into a hue fast spreading fire.
Within few minutes, the fire had extended into other rooms, forcing the inhabitants, including women and children, to run at top speed to safety.
Some of the youth living in the slum had initially attempted to fight the blaze and mitigate its devastating effects but their efforts were not enough.
The fire continued to consume the wooden structures and the valuable items that were being stored in them to the chagrin of the hapless victims.
Eventually, personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) arrived at the place and they managed to douse the strong inferno.
Luckily, no injuries or deaths were recorded in the fire outbreak, which lasted for so many hours, THE NEW PUBLISHER was told.
