The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has called on Ghanaians to support the police in identifying individuals who might disrupt the peace during the upcoming December 7 elections.
During his engagement with faith-based organizations in Accra on Sunday November, 24th 2024, Dr. Dampare emphasized to members of the Assemblies of God Church the importance of community involvement in preserving law and order. He stressed that public vigilance is crucial for maintaining national stability.
“We must allow ourselves to be vessels for God, connecting with and encouraging others not to let themselves be used by anyone, whether an individual or a group, for purposes of disturbing the peace in this country. While most people seek peace, there may still be a few who wish to cause trouble. This is where we once again plead with you to serve as God’s vessels. Keep your eyes and ears open, and when you hear or see such individuals planning evil, share the information with us so we can take action.
We will ensure such people are placed in designated locations, whether police cells or prisons, allowing them to live the life they choose there while the rest of us enjoy peace in our larger community.
As the security services, we are more than ready for the elections,” he stated.
Addressing another congregation at a Catholic Church in Accra, the IGP pleaded with members to continue serving as vessels for peace by educating their households, community members, colleagues, and fellow church members.
“We also want to plead with you that you continue to put yourself forward as a vessel to educate your households, community members, colleagues, also among the church and across anywhere that you can access, to make sure that those people also don’t make themselves available for anybody to use them to serve their selfish personal interest.”
The IGP pledged the security agencies’ commitment to peaceful elections, saying:
“As an assurance to the church, and through the church to the rest of the nation, the rest of Africa, and the rest of the world, we, the security agencies, are ready to ensure that we do all what it takes to work with everybody to sustain the peace, security, law, and order of the nation. We will live and stop at nothing in ensuring that this happens.”
Dr. Dampare assured the public that the police are prepared to act swiftly, proactively removing potential threats to ensure communities remain peaceful during and after the election period.
While acknowledging the importance of prayers for peace, he urged churches to back their prayers with actions that support the police in keeping the community safe and orderly.
Dr. Dampare reiterated that collaborative efforts between the police and the public would ensure a seamless electoral process. He encouraged all citizens to remain vigilant, proactive, and committed to safeguarding Ghana’s peace and stability during the elections.
