Ghanaian musician King Promise has been nominated in the Best African music act category at the 2021 MOBO awards.
King Promise would go up against Ayra Starr, Burna Boy, Ckay, Davido, NSG, Rema, Tems, Tiwa Savage and Wizkid for the award ceremony that takes place on Sunday 5 December.
The singer, born Gregory Bortey Newman, was nominated for Best African Music Act, making him the only Ghanaian musician nominated this year.
He goes into the awards with stiff competition from Nigeria’s heavyweights Burna Boy, Wizkid, Tiwa Savage and Davido. Also in contention for the Best African Music act award is East London’s rap collective NSG.
The ‘CCTV’ hit maker’s nomination increases the tally of Ghana’s representation at the awards. His predecessors Shatta Wale, Sarkodie, and Samini all worked hard under the year of review in correspondence with their nomination, with the Highgrade boss being the only artiste to bring home the MOBO award for ‘Best African Music Act’ in 2006.
A win for King Promise will be a perfect boost for the talented male vocalist ahead of his Promiseland concert slated for December 24.
Fans have enjoyed both singles off his much-anticipated album; Slow Down released in May, followed by Ring My Line featuring UK rapper Headie One who has also bagged a nomination in the Best Male Act category of the MOBO 2021.
Other nominees
UK-based rapper Dave leads the nominations with five nods; album, song and video of the year, plus best male act and best hip-hop act.
