KMA: Don’t Pay for Kejetia Stalls

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has warned traders and shop owners in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region, not to pay any money to any individual, group of persons or organisation with the purpose of securing a stall at Kejetia upon the completion of the central market redevelopment project.

The KMA said it has not contracted any individual or organisation to take money from traders for the purpose of allocating stalls.

In a statement, the Assembly warned that anybody found to be involved in extorting monies from traders will be ruthlessly dealt with.

Below is the full statement:

Alleged Extortion of Money for Allocation of Kejetia Stores

It has come to the notice of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly that some unscrupulous people are illegally making money from the ongoing Kejetia/Central Market Redevelopment Project.

These faceless people are allegedly extorting money from unsuspecting traders, shop owners and the public under the pretext of allocating stores to them at Kejetia upon completion of the project.

The KMA by this press release is sternly warning the public especially traders not to pay any money to any person, group of persons or organisation under the pretext of assisting them to secure stores at Kejetia.

The assembly wishes to make it clear to the public that no person, group of persons or organisations has been authorised to collect money on behalf of the KMA for the purposes of allocating stores to traders at Kejetia.

The assembly will soon commence validation of all traders and shop owners who were registered at the Kejetia lorry terminal prior to the commencement of the ongoing redevelopment project

The KMA further wishes to state that any trader, organisation or group of persons who will be found involved in alleged extortion of money from traders will be ruthlessly dealt with by the law.

Also any trader who will ignore this advise and decides to pay money to any person or group of persons for the purposes of allocation of stores at Kejetia to them does so at his or her own risk.

We will like to assure all major stakeholders involved in the redevelopment of the market that we shall continue to engage them at every stage of the project.

The assembly is therefore urging al traders seeking for information on the Kejetia project to contact the KMA public relations unit or the estate department for any further clarification on the project.
