THE KUMASI Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) is now banking its hopes on the private sector to help complete the Krofrom Market in Kumasi.
Construction works on the market, one of the most vibrant in Kumasi, started during the latter stages of ex-President Kufuor’s reign in the middle 2000s, but has become a white elephant due to inactivity at the construction site.
Speaking to the media recently, the Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei Mensah, admitted that ten years of closure of the Krofrom Market had negatively affected business in Kumasi, and disclosed that the current KMA management was not comfortable with its continuous closure.
The minister said the KMA is now seeking the support of the private sector to help complete some parts of the market as fast as possible.
“A portion of the Krofrom Market in Kumasi is already being financed by a private sector on a Build, Operate and Transfer (BOT) basis.
“The other portion of the market is supposed to be financed by the KMA but because of lack of funding, works on that portion had been stalled.
“The KMA is therefore considering engaging the support of the private sector so that they would complete that portion on a BOT basis”, he said.
The minister added that “the KMA has already written to government about this policy and we are now waiting for government’s approval”.
