KMA Supports People with Disabilities
THE KUMASI Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has supported scores of People with Disabilities (PWD) in the metropolis, with the needed incentives, including machines and money, to help make them become self-reliant.
The assembly, led by Hon. Osei Assibey Antwi, at a colourful ceremony on Monday, donated various items to help the beneficiaries to work and contribute their quota to national development.
Among the items were 30 Chest/Deep Freezers, 16 Industrial Sewing Machines, 4 Laptops, 3 Printers, 6 Cartridge, 1 Photocopier, 30 Voltage Guard, Shoe Making Machines, among others.
The presentation was made in compliance with Section 7 of the District Assembly Common Fund Act (DACF) 1993 (Act 455), which stipulates that two percent of the District Assembly Common Fund should be allocated to PWDs.
“The aim of the DACF for PWDs is to reduce poverty among all PWDs, particularly, those outside the formal sector of employment and to also enhance their social image through dignified labour”, Hon. Osei Assibey Antwi stated.
He said KMA had received GH¢136,310.20, representing the 4th quarter of 2016 and the 1st, 2nd and 3rd quarters of 2017.
The KMA boss noted that a committee formed by the assembly to enquire about the needs of PWDs in the metropolis, came up with the recommendation that led to the distribution of the items.
According to him, aside the items, different sums of money were also presented to PWDs for school fees, medicals and assistive devices.
