KNUST Chaos: Napo Calls For Calm, Meets Authorities & Student

The Ministry of Education will on Tuesday 23rd October meet with Authorities of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and students over the violence that erupted on campus on Monday.

A statement signed by the Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Education, Ekow Vincent Assifuah and forwarded to thepublisheronline.com “appealed for calm on all sides as a first step to resolving the difficulties.“

According to the statement, a delegation from the ministry is expected at the tertiary institution “to meet the university authorities and the students” following protests which resulted in the destruction of properties by the aggrieved students.

Angry students who staged a demonstration burned down the official vehicle of the Dean of Students and reportedly ransacked the Vice Chancellor’s office. The irate students also ransacked the security post on the school premises, where all security personnel have fled, in a protest that turned chaotic.

Thousands of aggrieved students took part in what was meant to be a peaceful demonstration but the situation escalated into chaos.

Meanwhile, the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has condemned the alleged assault of some 10 students and an alumnus, who were arrested by the police on Friday, 19 October 2018, for holding a vigil on campus without authorisation.

The situation caused some angry parents to storm the KNUST police station to demand the release of their children. The students were later released but the university said it will not rest on the matter.

The students claim the schools management is brutalizing them after school authorities accused the students of engaging in illegal ‘morale’ activities which included drumming during a hall week celebration.

At least one student was injured and 11 others were arrested after students clashed with internal security personnel of the school Sunday.
