The management of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) have pointed a finger at the alumni of the University Hall, popularly known as Katanga as the main plotters of Monday’s violent demonstration.
It was an ugly scene as angry students demonstrating against the school’s authorities turned violent with over 20 students being arrested after they resorted to vandalizing public and private properties.
The students staged the protest to register their displeasure over the arrest of their colleagues last week.
“Information available to KNUST is that some alumni of the University Hall have been the brain behind this orchestrated and executed vandalism as they came in several buses to participate in today’s activity”. – Management of the School Said.
Mr. Boateng, who condemned the incident said management has picked information that the destruction will worsen, hence the steps taken to avert any unforeseen circumstances.
“The university strongly condemns in no uncertain terms acts of vandalism leading to the destruction of government and private properties and destroying facilities obtained with tax payer’s money”.
“Intelligent reports state that the acts of vandalism will be sustained and escalate in the times ahead. It is only prudent that steps are taken to protect lives and properties”, he added.
School Shut Down
The university was subsequently shut down indefinitely taking effect from Monday, October 22, 2018.
This decision was reached because security had broken down and law and order could not be restored immediately.
The idea for the immediate closure of the top school was said to have been mooted by the Ashanti Regional Security Council (REGSEC) after a crisis meeting.
The authorities in the school had no other choice than to accept REGSEC’s suggestion by closing down the school until further notice, information suggested.
In line with this new directive, all Ghanaian students have been ordered to leave the school’s campus, latest by 12pm Today, to avoid trouble.
Arrangements were also being made by the school authorities with regards to the time and how foreign students would also leave the campus in peace.
The authorities have imposed also curfew on the school from 6pm to 6am as part of security measures to help restore law and order on the campus.
The chaotic scenes that were recorded at the school compelled REGSEC, led by the Regional Minister, Simon Osei Mensah, to meet and hatch a proper security plan to help bring lasting peace to the KNUST campus.
