Koforidua Technical University Teachers on Strike
The Koforidua branch of the Technical University Teachers Association (TUTAG) has served noticed to begin a full scale sit-down strike Thursday, 8 March 2018, if government fails to withdraw proposed amendment to the Technical University Bill 2017.
The bill seeks to transfer power from the governing council of Technical Universities to the National Council for Tertiary Education.
According to them, the bill, if passed into law, will render governing councils of technical universities powerless.
Speaking to Class News, Secretary to the Koforidua chapter of TUTAG, Nana Gyasi said: “We have declared a sit-down strike now and the decision has already been taken.
“We are waiting until Thursday, if we don’t hear anything satisfactory, then we’ll go on a full-scale strike.
“What we are doing at the moment is, we’ll go to work but will not teach but after Thursday, if we don’t hear anything satisfactory, we’ll go on a full scale strike.”
Meanwhile, the Ghana National Union of Technical Students has joined calls on government to expunge portions of the bill.
