LEAGUE LEADERS, Kumasi Asante Kotoko has beaten arch rivals, Hearts of Oak, by a lone goal to help boost their title aspirations.
Before the match dubbed the ‘Super Clash’, Kotoko had never won against Hearts in a league match at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi for ten years.
Cameroonian import, George Mfegue’s first half expertly converted penalty was enough to hand Kotoko all the three points at stake.
Kotoko, who were clearly determined to break the jinx, started on a brighter note as they searched for an early goal to unsettle Hearts.
As early as the third minute, Kotoko’s Brazilian star, Fabio Gama, unleashed a low drive from close range, which hit the bottom corner of the post.
The Hearts keeper, Richmond Ayi, who was very busy did his utmost best to prevent Kotoko from scoring as he was very active and agile.
However, he was eventually beaten in the 16th minute as Nfegue blasted home from the spot after Fabio Gama had been fouled in the box.
Afterwards, Kotoko pushed Hearts to the wall in an attempt to double their solitary lead and secure victory but all the chances that came their way, were wasted.
After the break, Hearts introduced speedsters, Patrick Razak and ex-Kotoko right back, Samuel Inkoom to search for parity but Kotoko defense were too strong.
Kotoko, backed by the home fans, had all the decent chances to bury Hearts but they strangely wasted them all to the chagrin of their fans.
