Mohammed Kudus, will miss West Ham’s next three games following a red card he received after scoring in West Ham’s heavy defeat to Tottenham.
His frustration boiled over when he raised his hand, striking Micky van de Ven and Pape Sarr in the face, which led to his dismissal.
Initially, the referee issued a yellow card, but after a VAR review, it was upgraded to a red card. His sending-off capped a challenging week, despite a promising start when he scored a well-placed goal to put West Ham ahead in the London derby.
Tottenham quickly equalized just before halftime, and within an eight-minute period in the second half, they netted three more goals.
Yves Bissouma, Son Heung-Min, and an own goal secured Spurs’ 4-1 victory. Frustrated by Tottenham’s momentum, Kudus lashed out at Van de Ven and Sarr, resulting in his first Premier League red card.
Earlier in the week, Kudus had already apologized to Ghanaians after the Black Stars’ defeat to Sudan, a result that severely dampened Ghana’s chances of qualifying for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. Despite these recent setbacks, Kudus remains a key player for West Ham, having scored two goals in his last two appearances.
However, his red card means he will now miss crucial upcoming matches against Manchester United, Nottingham Forest, and Everton, putting further pressure on the team.
On the other hand, West Ham United manager Julen Lopetegui has called for his players to stay calm in bad moments when reacting to Mohammed Kudus’ sending off in the English.
For under fire West Ham manager Lopetegui, the Spanish manager believes that the incident is something his team can learn from.
“I did not see the action back on TV but I think that if the referee reviewed it and decided that it was a red card then I cannot have a doubt. Maybe it is another point to improve, when we suffer in the bad moments we keep calm and fight to the end as a team” Lopetegui said to the BBC.
