THERE IS a general feeling of fear, panic and anxiety in Kumasi, the Ashanti Regional capital, this rainy season.
This follows reports that four people, including a toddler, one-year-old Awal Mohammed, have been killed by raging flood waters in just two days.
Hundreds of people were displaced by the floods and property estimated at several thousands of Ghana Cedis were lost and some structures submerged.
The Heavens opened up on Wednesday and Thursday and it reportedly caused massive havoc in the boisterous city.
The rains washed away the child, who was walking in flooded waters at Sawaba near Kumasi, on Wednesday.
Barely 24 hours after the toddler’s death, a woman in her 50’s, was also washed away at Oforikrom near Kumasi.
On that same Thursday, floods also claimed the life of a 70-year-old man, Mr. Bernard Sarpong, who was swept away in the rainstorm at Sokoban-Ampabame in the Atwima-Kwanwoma District.
The deaths were increased to four, after reports that a female student was washed away at Buoho near Kumasi.
Aside the deaths, the floods also destroyed several items at the newly constructed Kejetia Market in Kumasi.
Rainwaters were seen entering shops of traders and it caused nightmarish moments for the shop owners.
The persistent floods in the city is said to have sparked fear in the people especially as the raining season has arrived.
The worst affected communities include Abuakwa-Manhyia, Sawaba, Kejetia, Atafoa, Sewua, Prabon, Atonsu, Santasi, Patasi, Danyame, Atasemanso, amongst others.
The Regional NADMO Coordinator advised the people to take adequate safety measures for their protection since meteorologists had warned of more rains in the days ahead.
