Kumasi To Get First Film Village – Socrates Confirms
Director for Creative Arts at the National Commission on Culture (NCC), Socrate Sarfo, has assured that, government will first build a Film Village in the Ashanti Region, before it proceeds to set up one in the Eastern Region.
According to him, even though there are plans to build a village in the Eastern Region, that will not prevent the earlier one earmarked for the Ashanti Region.
In a panel discussion on ‘Best Entertainment Show’, hosted by Halifax Ansah-Addo, he confirmed that there are deliberations for a second Film Village at Kyebi, in the Eastern Region.
“There was a first proposal for Eastern Region, then there was a second request for Kumasi”, he confirmed.
Sarfo’s explanation comes after the movie fraternity in Kumasi (Kumawood) petitioned Parliament over the government’s decision to situate the village in the Eastern region.
The Kumawood team maintained that Kumasi, the hub for local movies and productions, is the best fit for the Film Village.
According to them, the chief of Hemang (husband of actress Mercy Aseidu) and the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II are all willing to give the industry acres of land for the project.
However Socrates Sarfo maintained: ”Kumasi won’t be rejected; plans are advanced to build the first film village at the Ashanti Region. Investors are now on board to make it a success. There are deliberations ahead for the building of the village in Kumasi.”
A lot of film lovers, it would be recalled, raised eye-brows earlier in the year when the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, in his 2019 Budget Statement, said government had acquired 200 acres of land in the Eastern Region to build a Film Village.
