Kwame Nkrumah Not ‘Juju’ Man
…Personal Driver
A PERSONAL driver of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah has vehemently debunked assertions that Ghana’s first President practiced occultism.
Opanin Kwaku Bonku, who drove Nkrumah for five years, said he did not for once see the ex-president practicing ‘Juju’ during their time together.
He has therefore urged Ghanaians to reject the speculations that the Osagyefo was virtually a spiritualist, who relied on ‘Juju’ to survive as president.
‘Juju’ Rumour
There have been rumours that Nkrumah relied heavily on ‘Juju’ to gain total control over the CPP, which helped him to lead the country for many years.
Other unconfirmed reports also indicate that he had a white handkerchief, which he waved publicly to charm the people to obey his orders, and that he secured most of his spiritual powers from ‘Kankan Nyame’, a powerful god in those days.
Driver’s Report
Opanin Bonku, who started driving Nkrumah at the age of 21, said some people deliberately linked Dr. Nkrumah to ‘Juju’ just to dent his image.
“Ignore all the false assertions and wild rumours making rounds that Dr. Nkrumah used ‘Juju’ to control Ghanaians when he was the president.
“Dr. Nkrumah was an upright person, who did not indulge in ‘Juju’ when he was the president of Ghana, so don’t fall for the wild rumours to dent his image.
“I was his personal driver for five years so I walked closely with him for so many years and I did not see him once visiting a shrine or talking about ‘Juju’”.
The 83-year-old man, who was speaking on Nhyira FM in Kumasi on Ghana’s 61st Independence Day, described his former boss as a nice and noble person, and recalled several positive things that came into his life when he was Nkrumah’s driver.
