Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kwesi Nyantakyi has filed a defamation lawsuit against journalist Dan Kweku Yeboah and his media outlet, Peace FM, seeking 10 million cedis in damages.
The lawsuit, submitted on Tuesday morning, 29th October, 2024, also targets Pulse Ghana and GhanaWeb for their role in disseminating Yeboah’s allegations that Nyantakyi embezzled $2 million from the GFA.
Nyantakyi, who previously served as a FIFA Council Member and GFA President before his resignation, asserts that these claims are unfounded, labeling them as “reckless and defamatory.”
According to the lawsuit, the additional media outlets are included for amplifying Yeboah’s baseless accusations without verification.
The legal action contends that Yeboah’s statements implicated Nyantakyi in theft from GFA accounts, leading to considerable damage to his reputation.
The lawsuit specifically references Yeboah’s assertion that “President Kwesi Nyantakyi alone went to Unibank and withdrew GFA’s two million dollars and embezzled or misappropriated it for his personal benefit.”
Nyantakyi’s filing emphasizes that the claims made by Yeboah and propagated by the named media outlets were not only false but also published with the intent to tarnish his reputation. He argues that these statements have caused him significant public distress and professional harm.
The lawsuit describes Yeboah’s remarks as “wicked, malicious, and deliberate falsehoods,” intended to incite public disdain and diminish Nyantakyi’s standing among reasonable members of society. Furthermore, Nyantakyi points out that the media outlets failed to verify the allegations with credible sources, labeling their reporting as irresponsible journalism.
Through his legal counsel, Nyantakyi is seeking damages along with a formal retraction from the defendants, aiming to restore his reputation amidst the damaging allegations.
