Mahama Falls On Own Sword! Says Free SHS Is Untouchable

Former President John Dramani Mahama has stressed that no government in the country can reverse the free Senior High School (SHS) programme because it is a constitutional provision.

According to him, the social intervention policy, which was introduced by New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration in 2017 “is here to stay”.

“The free SHS programme is here to stay”, he said to a rapturous applause from an excited audience at the Kumasi Technical University.

He added “the free SHS policy is enshrined in the 1992 Constitution; therefore, no government in the future can reverse the policy”.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC), of which Mr. Mahama is the flagbearer for the 2020 polls, had constantly opposed a wholesale free SHS policy, with some party leaders saying it was not feasible.

Others even said the country did not have sufficient funds to run such a capital-intensive programme.

If Mahama’s latest statement is anything to go by, then the fears of many Ghanaians, that a future NDC government would collapse policy, should have been allayed by now.
