Former President John Dramani Mahama on Saturday paid off a balance of GH¢110,000.00 that is needed to save the Sofoline Central Mosque in Kumasi from being demolished.
The mosque risked being demolished after it turned out that the parcel of land it was situated someway somehow belonged to a private developer who intended to use the land for other purposes.
The Islamic Community raised a protest but could not provide any document to counter claim ownership of the said land.
The private developer then reached a compromise that he could let go the land if he is paid an amount of GHC280,000.
Unfortunately the Islamic Community was able raise an amount of GHC170, which is below the agreement amount for which the owner of the land would let go.
Former President John Mahama, on Saturday stormed the Sofoline Central Mosque with a cash amount of the remaining GHC110,000 to completed the amount needed to save the sacred place of worship
The donation follows an appeal from the leadership of the Mosque to enable them secure the land on which the Mosque is situated.
John Mahama also pledged to support the planned renovation of the mosque, which was built by Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, for Muslim soldiers who had returned from peacekeeping at the time.
The Islamic Community in Kumasi and beyond have expressed gratitude to the former President for the donation and raised intercessory prayers for him.
