Mahama Starts 5-day Greater Accra Tour Today
Former President John Dramani Mahama today began his 5-day campaign in the Greater Accra Region from the Trobu Constituency.
He has since visited Amasaman constituency and will be continuing to Domeabra Obom, Bortianor Ngleshie Amanfrom, Weija Gbawe, Anya Sowutoum and Okaikoi North Constituencies on the first day.
The Greater Accra Region is the sixth after the #Go4JM team’s tour of the Central, Northern, Upper West, Upper East and Brong Ahafo Regions.
Speaking at Tantra Hills in the Trobu Constituency, the former president advised President Nana Akufo-Addo to apologise to Ghanaians for making a u-turn on contracting loans for development. While in opposition, Nana Addo and his New Patriotic Party (NPP) criticised the Mahama administration for taking loans to develop the country and promised to do things differently when elected.
But that promise has not been kept by the NPP. In its first 18 months, the Akufo-Addo government has borrowed in excess of GH¢37 billion, nearly $8 billion, with President Akufo-Addo stating last week that his government would borrow to finance its programmes.
According to President Mahama, Nana Addo should apologise reminding him that “we have all your quotations on loans”.
“Today, if you have turned around and you have seen that you can borrow and invest in assets, then the first thing you do is to apologise and say sorry to Ghanaians… when you behave as if we don’t know what you said, and say even the US is borrowing…”
Mr. Mahama says after borrowing almost GH¢40 billion, the NPP cannot tell Ghanaians what it has used the money. He also rejected claims by the NPP government that it is using some of the borrowed money to service the debt left behind by the NDC government, noting that the NDC in power also paid off some of the loans left behind by the NPP administration, citing the Eurobond as an example.
