Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has openly admitted that his team is not yet at the level to challenge for the Premier League title next season.
The former Ajax coach has voiced skepticism regarding Manchester United’s ability to contend for the top spot in the league, instead suggesting that their focus should be on securing a place within the top four.
Manchester United’s disappointing early exit from the Champions League group stages, coupled with a series of lackluster performances, has heightened pressure on the 54-year-old coach.
Criticism from both fans and pundits has mounted, with many advocating for his removal. Despite these challenges, Manchester United still has an upcoming final against local rivals Manchester City in the FA Cup.
A victory in this match could provide a much-needed boost for the team moving forward. However, the manager, Ten Hag, remains doubtful about the prospects for improvement in the following season.
In a recent press conference, he expressed uncertainty about the team’s ability to challenge for the Premier League title, suggesting that their primary aim should be securing a place among the top four teams.
“When everyone is available, we’re competing for top 4. We’re not in the position to compete for number one or two,” he said.
He however was quick to point out the massive competition in the League, a situation which according to him makes it difficult to compete for the title
“There are some teams. It’s not anymore a two horse race or three-horse race in the Premier League. There is Villa, there is Spurs, there is Newcastle.
So many good teams. There are six, or seven teams. All can compete. Chelsea. Don’t forget them. They are all competing for the top four and we are one of them. But we are not, at this moment, in this position to compete for number one or two,” he added.
