Market Queen Calls on NGOs to Take Up Sex Education
A trader in Accra has advocated Non-Governmental Organizations to take up sex education in schools.
Aunty Bee, who is Market Queen at Makola, spoke on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show Thursday and said sex education by parents is alien to the Ghanaian customs hence the need for NGOs to fill the gap.
“In Ghana, a woman cannot talk directly to her daughter about sex…when you go to the European countries, it is very open but in Ghana, it is somewhat disgraceful to have the sex talk with your teenage daughter,” she said.
According to Aunty Bee, the responsibility should be shifted to NGOs because the children would be more comfortable to discuss sex with someone they do not have a personal relationship with.
Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Charlotte Osei who hosted the show to commemorate International Women’s Day, added that other women can help in sex education if the parent-daughter relationship will constrict that.

“…as women, we should be reaching out to these young girls because if you can’t talk to your daughter, somebody else could,” she said.
She also called on other influential groups like the chiefs and clergy to join the advocacy against sexual abuse against young girls.
The women’s comments come in reaction to a Joy News documentary which features some female students of Ejisuman Senior High School in the Ashanti Region who were allegedly abused sexually, by their male teachers.
The students who spoke to Joy News in exclusive interviews were later hauled before a disciplinary committee.
In another circumstance, a sex video of a High School girl and the headmaster of her former Junior High School went viral.
The video sparked public outrage with many calling for the headmaster while others blamed the student.
Marking International Women’s Day, the panellists on the Super Morning Show on Joy FM were at a consensus that more education on sex is needed and that NGOs and other influential bodies should pick up the mantle.
