Massive Clean-Up for Asantehemaa’s Funeral Rites
The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) embarked on a clean-up exercise on Saturday, 2 December as authorities prepared for the final funeral rites of late Asantehemaa, Nana Afia Kobi Serwah Ampem II.
The exercise was held in Adum Pampaso, Bantama High Street, Abrepo Junction to Suame Roundabout, through to Airport Roundabout, Suame to Bremang, Dr Mensah to Manhyia Palace among others.
In participation were traders, NGOs, Assembly members, Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) and the general public. The special exercise forms part of preparations for the grand final funeral rites of the queen mother who died last year.
“As you are all aware, Ashanti Region has lost our queen mother and the programme has started, and it is our tradition. It has been the tradition of the Asantes,” Kumasi Mayor, Osei Assibey Antwi told the media.
He said the exercise was appropriate since the final funeral rites will bring many people to the region. He said the exercise was not going to end after the final funeral rites “because we started the cleaning and greening of the city three months ago and it is going to be an ongoing exercise”.
“As you are all aware, Kumasi used to be Garden City of West Africa and that is what we want back. We want to get the glory back,” he added.
