Mayor Raps ‘Kente’ Sellers
THE KUMASI Mayor, Osei Assibey Antwi, has tasked ‘Kente’ dealers to bring forth innovative ways to help attract foreign customers.
He observed that ‘Kente’ cloth is adored and revered all over the world but regretted that dealers of the product were not making enough money.
“The ‘Kente’ cloth is admired all over the world and it is unfortunate that local dealers of the sacred product are not making much profit.
“You as dealers of ‘Kente’ should henceforth develop strategies in order to woo customers, especially foreigners so you can get more cash”.
He also suggested that dealers should begin to partner international clothing companies to make the fabric a global brand.
The Kumasi Mayor was speaking when the Ashanti Regional ‘Kente’ Sellers Association members visited him in his office last week.
The Association, led by Nana Akwasi Agyeman, claimed some unscrupulous people had invaded the industry with fake products and thus decided to report the matter to the Mayor, who later assured that his outfit would not allow trend to go on.
“You said those people are selling substandard ‘Kente’ cloth on the floor in some places in the city and we shall investigate the reports immediately.
“If the reports are authentic then those people would be prevented from selling substandard ‘Kente‘cloth to unsuspecting people”, the Mayor assured.
