Kotoko suffered an away defeat in Takwa after losing 1-0 to Medeama SC in the NC Special Competition on Thursday.
The Porcupine Warriors after beating Aduana Stars in their opening match fell to a resilient Medeama side who maintained their dominance at the T&A Park.
Striker Kwame Boateng scored from the penalty spot in the 34th minute after Kotoko defender Abass Mohammed handled the ball on the goal line.
A well-delivered free kick from Medeama captain Joseph Tetteh Zutah into the goal area of Kotoko got a connection from Awudu Tahiru whose header was going straight into the net before Abass deliberately prevented the ball with his hands.
Referee Maxwell Handson had no option than to whistle for a penalty, eventually issuing a red card to the Kotoko left-back. Kwame Boateng converted by sending goalkeeper Felix Annan the wrong way.
Kotoko’s effort to get the equalizer proved futile as they failed to create enough descent opportunities in the game despite dominating the second department of the game.
The introduction of Evans Owusu, Stephen Nyarko and Martin Antwi could do little to help Kotoko avoid defeat at a difficult ground.
Kotoko will next travel to face Eleven Wonders in match-day 3 on Sunday with Medeama taking on Bechem United.
