Captain Djurre Jan Schutte, Nautical Operation Manager of the Mercy Ship, and his colleagues on November 9, 2023 paid a visit to the Regional Maritime University (RMU) in Ghana to explore ways the institution can contribute to their upcoming humanitarian mission. The visit comes ahead of the Mercy Ship’s anticipated arrival in Ghana next year.
The visiting group was warmly received by the Provost of the Regional Maritime University, Dr. Denis Njomo Atehnjia, who was joined by all the Dean and Deputy Registrar Evelyn Quartey.
Dr. Atehnjia provided the group with an introduction to the university and its history, although he noted the absence of the Acting Vice Chancellor Dr. Jethro W. Brooks, who is out on official business.
During the meeting, Dr. Atehnjia extended an invitation to the Mercy Ship officials to collaborate with the university and offer support that would enhance the school’s capabilities. He expressed his delight at the unexpected visit and expressed hope that the university would receive special consideration when the Mercy Ship arrives in Ghana, allowing students and staff to gain firsthand experience.
Captain Schutte, while detailing the purpose and mission of the Mercy Ship, explained that it is a specialized hospital vessel equipped with medical personnel trained to undertake complex surgical procedures, including burn surgery and other critical medical interventions. The ship’s primary goal is to provide relief to individuals suffering from various medical conditions, especially those who do not have access to advanced medical care.
The University gave the visiting group a comprehensive tour of the campus, including practical simulation rooms and the safety training centre anchorage, allowing them to experience the university’s programs and activities. The tour also offered breathtaking views of the sea, reinforcing the institution’s maritime connection.
As the preparations for the Mercy Ship’s arrival in Ghana continue, this visit to the RMU marks a promising step towards mutual cooperation, with the hope that the humanitarian mission will have a positive and lasting impact on the local community and the students of the university.
