Former Speaker of Parliament, Prof. Aaron Michael Oquaye, has denied endorsing Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the 2024 elections.
According to Prof. Oquaye, a recent report in the media said he had endorsed Dr. Bawumia but the said report is not true.
“I wish to state emphatically that I have not endorsed anyone as the 2024 flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party,” Prof Oquaye said in a rejoinder dated Thursday, May 19, 2021.
According to the rejoinder, on Monday, May 17, 2021, he granted an interview to Okyeman TV’s Raymond Kumah.
“The interview was not about flagbearer at all”, the rejoinder exposed.
The rejoinder added that the interview centered on the NPP and what it stand from ancient to modern, including Ghana’s Digitalization Progress.
“It must be emphasized that no comparison was made with any of those interested in flag-bearership. It featured President Kufuor on specific areas. No endorsement was suggested and I did not endorse anyone,” it added.
He believes citing Dr Bawumia, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto and Alan Kyeremanten as some members of the current NPP administration doing well should not be seen as an endorsement for any candidate.
“No endorsement was suggested to me, and I did not endorse anybody. I consider Dr. Bawumia as an ‘A Plus’ performer, but so are other NPP stalwarts, including Hon. Kyerematen, Dr. Akoto, Hon. Ursula, Dr. Prempeh. All these are excellent materials, and I will continue to say so in context,” he stated.
“To have misconstrued and misrepresented the comment on Ghana’s digitization progress as an indication for a particular individual to be the Flagbearer of the NPP in 2024 is not only inaccurate but complete falsehood. Members of the public are encouraged to disregard this misleading publication in the Daily Dispatch and other online media platforms,” Prof. Oquaye added.
