Min. Of Education Commemorate World Teachers Day
The Ministry of Education on the occasion of World Teachers Day has congratulated all teachers which according to the body responsible for better welfare of all teachers considers with the Ghana Teacher Prize Awards to be held to Commemorate the occasion.
The Ministry of Education is taking the opportunity to celebrate teachers for the central role they play in providing children with quality education and the positive impact of their contribution to societal development.
In a statement signed by Hon. Matthew Opoku Prempeh Commenting on the celebration, he expressed high appreciation to all teachers adding that, the role of teachers has become very significant in the growth of Ghana.
”This country could not have come this far in developing her human resource base without the sterling work done by our teachers to impart knowledge to our young citizens in particular, often in challenging circumstances and at great personal sacrifice” – he said.
According to Hon. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, government of Ghana believes that teachers are central to the several reforms in education being currently pursued to improve quality education in order to deliver confident, competitive workforce for national development.
This year’s World Teachers’ Day is being celebrated under the theme- “The right to education means the right to a qualified teacher.” In line with the theme for this year’s celebration, members of the general public and corporate bodies are being called to support initiatives that help to enhance and train qualified teachers for the classroom.
This day is always a good time for teachers to be appreciated. It is also a time for addressing the concerns of educational personnel policies, their recruitment and work conditions.
World Teachers’ Day takes place every year on October 5 and it is celebrated in over 100 countries and spearheaded by the UNESCO.
Treat Teachers With Respect – NAGRAT
National Association Of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) on day mark at celebrating hard-work of teachers has called for urgent attention to the many difficulties facing teachers across the country.
The President of the Association, Angel Carbonu in an interview on Citi Fm said among other things, there must be urgent steps to end what he described as casualization of teachers.
He bemoaned the high incident of teachers being hired and fired at will especially by proprietors of private schools. According to him, such practice is unacceptable and must not be allowed to continue to fester.
This he explained if attended to by government of Ghana will help create awareness of the significant role teachers’ play in education and human development.
Salary arrears of 70,000 teachers cleared – Bawumia
Government has cleared the salary arrears of 70,000 teachers since assuming office, the Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has disclosed.
Dr Bawumia said the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government inherited salary arrears owed some 100,000 teachers through promotion benefits or otherwise.
Speaking at the commemoration of the World Teachers’ Day at Presbyterian Boys’ Senior High, Legon (Presec) in Accra, the Vice President noted that the government has since reduced that number significantly.
“As we speak we have reduced that through the validation process to just 30,000 teachers so we are on course and should eliminate that soon,” he promised.
