AN ABANDONED mining pit claimed the lives of two men at Odumase near Konongo on Saturday morning.
The deceased persons and one other person, who is now batting for his life in the hospital, had entered the deep pit in search of gold.
Unfortunately for the illegal miners, the abandoned mining pit, which is very deep in depth, suddenly caved in and trapped them.
An alarm was quickly raised by the fear-stricken people at the scene, which attracted more people, who managed to rescue the miners.
Unfortunately, by the time the three people were rescued, two of them had already given up the ghost, so they were sent to the morgue.
The third person, was initially feared to be dead, but, luckily, survived the scary accident. He was then rushed to the hospital for treatment.
According to people at the scene, illegal miners, especially males, usually troop to the area and dig for gold in the abandoned mining pit.
They said they didn’t know what happened on that fateful Saturday, around 10am, as the deep pit, strangely, caved in on the miners.
The exact names of the two dead miners were not known by the local people, an indication that they came from a different community to mine for gold.
Meanwhile, the police at Konongo and the nearby communities have since started investigations into the accident in the abandoned mining pit.
