MMT Scandal: ‘I Was Only A Mediator’ – Amoako Tuffuor
A senior member of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Amoako Tuffuor, whose name has popped up in a supposed corrupt deal at the Metro Mass Transit Limited, has explained that he is not complicit, and that he only acted as a mediator between the Managing Director, Bennet Aboagye, and his supposed blackmailers.
He told Citi News that he decided not to immediately report the blackmailers to the police in the hope of retrieving some secret recordings.
“I was only a mediator between two people talking about their business. My interest all along was to make sure that when they got the tape, I can also get hold of it and then play it and make sure that whatever concerned the president or ministers, I can deal with it,” he said.
Dr. Amoako Tuffuor is alleged to have attempted bribing some staff of the company on behalf of the Metro Mass Managing Director, Bennet Aboagye, to be able to extract evidence from those the MD believes are “blackmailers.”
The workers have petitioned the office of the Special Prosecutor to investigate Mr. Bennet Aboagye’s corrupt deals in the company.
But Dr. Tuffuor said he could not be said to be perpetuating any crime in directly engaging the supposed blackmailer.
He said he is not connected to the operations of the company and that he was only acting in the interest of truth.
“I don’t know about any shady deal because I don’t work with Metro Mass Transport. Secondly, I don’t do any business with them. So I am not involved in any so-called shady deal.”
“What I am involved in is that one Lawal went and broke into the MD’s office and installed a recording device. He shows up after months that he has records of recorded messages on the MD. And also when he got to meet me, he told me that he has messages on ministers and the president. And I got interested, so my strategy was very simple—either I hand him over straight to the police, in which case he may not come back with all the truth, or I can cajole him gently, get whatever information that I need and give it to the presidency,” he said.
He however alleged that the woes of the current MD and attempts to indict him in the recent scandal were all plots by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), to divert attention from the rot they left in the company before leaving office.
MMT MD suspended
Meanwhile, the embattled Managing Director of MMT, Bennet Aboagye, has been directed by the company’s board to proceed on leave.
It said proceeding on leave would enable investigations to be conducted into the matter.
